Reading Interface Guide

This essay uses a scrollytelling interface: as you read, the images and text citations respond to your position in the text.

• Light and Dark Mode Select the light/dark toggle on the top right side of the reading interface depending on your reading preference.

  Images and Item Pages Select any image to expand it. Select the "visit item" link in the image caption to visit the full record and learn more.

  Scroll Through Chapters Scroll past the end of a chapter to continue into the next or select which area you want to read in the sidebar table of contents.
• ◫
  Interactive Visualizations Some sections contain interactive displays. Use the Skip → button in the lower-right corner to move past a visualization and continue reading.

  Contents Sidebar The sidebar marks two types of entries. Click any entry to jump directly to that content in the essay.
